Peter Lind, Flavor Development Specialist
Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Waterbury, Vermont
Hello. See me again. My name is Andika Jati Nugroho. I’m from G class. I got my second assignment from my teacher, Mrs. Bening. This unit is about “The Most Wanted Jobs in The World”. Luckily, we will discuss about Peter Lind, a flavor development specialist in an ice cream company.
Here it is.
First. I want to tell you, that I was simply shocked and I am still confused about Mrs. Bening’s system at reading activities. In Senior High School, reading is just a simple thing. We just read. Commonly, the text was fictional. But, Mrs. Bening used another way. The text was based on true story. And, we had to use other sources to find the information of text and think critically at understanding the text.
Let us start into the core. There is an ice cream company named Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream in Vermont. It is located in North-East of United States of America. Of course, the climate in that region is cool. That’s the reason why chili does not exist there. Now, I will answer the questions.
1. What are Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia?
Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia is an ice cream flavor. Based on the text, “The man behind it is a former chef, baker, and caterer with sensitive taste buds and an enviable cholesterol count of 168. Then, to keep it so low, someone should avoid eggs and cut down on cheese and red meat.”
Based on our last discussion in the class, why they named it to be Chunky Monkey because it has a nice sound to be said. It has suffix with way “Y”. That makes a better sound.
I browsed around the website about Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, I finally found this information:
“Chunky Monkey
Banana Ice Cream with Fudge Chunks & Walnuts
To come up with a flavor as fun as the name, we monkeyed around with bunches of test batches until we knew we had a winner. Simply put, we think it's the best majorly nutty-&-chocolatey-chunky ice cream gone bananas you'll ever go ape for. A final note, just in case you were wondering: this flavor contains no actual monkeys. That would be wrong...not to mention silly. Enjoy!

While, why they named it to be Cherry Garcia because a guitarist named Jerry Garcia. Maybe, he is a well-known musician in Vermont. They used that name, to make profit in business. People will curious and buy the ice cream because of that name.
Based on the website, I found this.

4. According to Peter Lind, what is the difference between producing ice cream in small quantity and in mass production? What do you think makes the difference?
According to Peter Lind, the difference between producing ice cream in small quantity and in mass production is about the quality. He said, “We can make it ten gallons at a time without difficulty, but the quality slips when we try to produce more.”
Based on my opinion. Something that makes difference is about producing with the best quality. Usually, something is good in a few. But, when it gets bigger, it will be bad. It can be related to producing ice cream in small quantity and in mass production. At this morning, I talked to Mrs. Bening about this question, but she rejected my opinion. I answered that the quality slips when producing ice cream in mass production because it has to get accurate ingredients harder. Sometimes, company will afraid to take a big risk. They will loss their profit if they make a wrong movement. In mass production, there are a lot of problems that should to be considered. Start from the costs, the ingredients, the workers, and others. A company should have many professional workers, who minimize the loss of quality on their products.
Okay, then. It is complete enough for me to answer the questions at this second assignment. Thanks for reading. Please, correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you.
